ALLEN PARK (WXYZ) - Nick Fairley will continue to practice with the second defensive unit as the Lions prepare for their third preseason game of the year.
Fairley did not start Friday's game against the Oakland Raiders, but played in the opening series. By head coach Jim Caldwell's account, Fairley played better against Oakland than he did against Cleveland in the preseason opener.
When asked about the defensive line before Monday's practice, Caldwell said, "“If you’re asking me whether or not Fairley is going to be a starter, he’s not starting right now; he’s second team,” Caldwell said.
Earlier in his news conference, Caldwell said, unrelated to Fairley, "I'm in the business of winning games and winning games now. I'm looking to put people in positions who can help us win games now."
As the Lions prepare for Friday's matchup with Jacksonville, Caldwell also said the starters may play into the third quarter, though each individuals' time on the field will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Calvin Johnson is likely to see his first preseason action this week.
"We'd like to get him some work this week, but that's today," said Caldwell, pointing out that circumstances could change in the days leading up to the game.
