ALLEN PARK, Mich. - The Detroit Lions have hired Teryl Austin as their new defensive coordinator.
Austin worked in Baltimore with new Lions head coach Jim Caldwell. He spent the last three seasons with the Ravens as the defensive backs coach.
He helped coach a defense that was 12th against the pass in 2013.
Austin is Caldwell's first hire, making the official announcement two days after he was announced as the Lions head coach.
Before joining the Ravens in 2011, Austin was the defensive backs coach with the Arizona Cardinals from 2007-09 and the Seattle Seahawks from 2003-05.
Austin was the University of Florida's defensive coordinator during the 2010 season. The Gators defense ranked ninth nationally that year.
The 48-year old was also a defensive assistant at the University of Michigan from 1999-2002. He coached with Caldwell at Wake Forest, spending three seasons as the team's defensive backs coach from 1993-95.
