ALLEN PARK, Mich. - Lions tight end Tony Scheffler was cleared to return from his concussion suffered against the Green Bay Packers, but the team had no plans for him anymore. The team released the eight-year veteran Tuesday afternoon.
The emergence of undrafted rookie Joseph Fauria paved the way for Scheffler's release.
In 50 games over four seasons with the Lions, Scheffler had 120 catches for 1317 yards. He scored eight touchdowns, with six coming in 2011.
To fill his spot on the roster, Detroit signed tackle Barry Richardson.
