REPORT: Lions to open season at home on Monday Night Football

(WXYZ) - The Lions will open the 2014 season on Monday night, September 8 at Ford Field against the New York Giants, according to a radio report in New York.

WFAN radio leaked the New York Giants schedule this afternoon. The Giants will play on the road in Detroit on September 8.  If the NFL stays true to its new tradition of playing two games on the opening Monday night of the season, the game will likely kick off at 7pm

The NFL schedule will be officially released tonight at 8pm.

Also of note, it's not guaranteed that the Lions will play either the Bills or the Dolphins on Thanksgiving. A new broadcasting provision has been put in place that allows CBS and FOX to swap games, meaning the Lions could face an NFC opponent on Thanksgiving and the game can still be broadcast on CBS.

In addition to the Giants, the Lions host five other NFC teams at home this season - Green Bay, Chicago, Minnesota, New Orleans and Tampa Bay.
