NOVI, Mich. - Nobody ever expects to win a contest.
Tuesday, students at Deerfield Elementary in Novi were surprised as the recipients of a text-to-win contest, and found out they would get a visit from members of the Detroit Lions.
They knew it would be fun, but had no idea who would show up.
Enter Matthew Stafford . . . and chaos.
"They put a lot of time and effort to get us out here. They won the contest, and we're happy to be here," Stafford said in a brief moment away from his adoring young fans.
Local Walgreens stores partnered with Pepsi to give schools the chance to text-to-win a play date with the Lions. The team worked with Playworks to give the students a unique, new look at recess.
Teachers, parents, and students led a campaign within their Novi community to bring their heroes to the playground.
"These kids deserve it. Absolutely. What a great opportunity and beautiful day to play outside," fourth grade teacher Julee Henry said.
Wide receiver Kris Durham, fullback Shaun Chapas, and quarterback Kellen Moore joined Stafford.
