Franchitti wins Chevorlet Detroit Grand Prix pole, but penalty puts Viso up front

DETROIT - Racing returned to Belle Isle Friday with a messy welcome from Mother Nature.

Rain drenched qualifying for the first race of this weekend's Dual in Detroit at the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.

Dario Franchitti won the pole after a wet round of qualifying, but because of a drive-through penalty, he was docked 10 spots and will start 11th.

EJ Viso, who posted the second-best time, will start up front in Saturday's race.

"A good day for the team after I crashed the car this morning," Franchitti said after being presented with the Verizon P1 Award.

"(During) qualifying there was a wet session, a dry session, and a wet session. We had to deal with all conditions."

And the forecast for Saturday? Rain.
