ST. LOUIS - The Red Wings will start the season without Todd Bertuzzi in the lineup for an extended period of time.
The 37-year old forward is expected to miss weeks, not days, with mono. Head coach Mike Babcock told reporters the news Saturday morning.
Bertuzzi didn't make the road trip with the team, as Babcock said Friday the veteran was sick with the flu. The new diagnosis will keep him out of the lineup for "a chunk of time," Babcock said.
Detroit is already without Darren Helm, who is nursing a sore back. Helm is expected to return Friday at the earliest.
Patrick Eaves is cleared to return from his concussion that has kept him away from game action for a year, but the team is taking it slowly with him. Jan Mursak will likely play against St. Louis Saturday night.
