DETROIT - Nicklas Lidstrom will return to the ice in a Red Wings jersey this year.
The recently retired defenseman will skate in the Alumni Showdown on December 30, leading up to the Winter Classic. The Red Wings made the announcement Friday morning.
"I will be part of that game," Lidstrom told DetroitRedWings.com.
"I'm really looking forward to the Winter Classic and being a part of something like that again, and to play with some of my former teammates when I played back in 90s and early 2000s. It'll be exciting."
He joins Chris Chelios, Gordie Howe, Larry Murphy, Kris Draper, Dino Ciccarelli, Mark Howe, Brendan Shanahan, Aaron Ward, Darren McCarty, Joe Kocur, Mickey Redmond, Chris Osgood, Mike Vernon, and a host of other former Red Wings already signed up for the two games at Comerica Park.
Steve Yzerman has yet to commit to play in the games. Before the lockout postponed the Winter Classic last season, Yzerman said he wouldn't participate in the event . Since the rescheduling, Ken Holland has been hopeful to get the longtime captain to sign up.
Lidstrom, a seven-time Norris Trophy winner in Detroit, retired after the 2011-12 season.
He played his first game for the Red Wings in 1991. He was a member of four Stanley Cup championship teams - 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008. He also played in the Stanley Cup Final in 1995 and 2009.
In 20 seasons, Lidstrom never failed to play in the postseason, finishing his career with 263 playoff games to his credit.
