DETROIT (WXYZ) -- As part of the "Farewell to The Joe" on Wednesday, the Red Wings invited fans to paint farewell messages on the arena's ice surface.

Several paintings featured tributes to the late Gordie Howe and Mike Ilitch, as well as Detroit scenery and fan favorite Al the Octopus.

One fan put an extra personal touch into his painting.

Noah Mendez, a Woodhaven High School student, painted "Prom 2017? -Noah" to ask his girlfriend of three years, Savannah Viecelli, to the school's prom next month.

Viecelli, who said yes, was downright giddy about the surprise, exclaiming "I'm so excited!" as she looked at the message.
