(WXYZ) - Danny DeKeyser has helped bolster the Red Wings defensive unit since joining the team as an unsigned rookie free agent in March.
Now, they'll have to do without him for the remainder of the playoffs.
Detroit head coach Mike Babcock told reporters in Anaheim DeKeyser suffered a broken thumb in the team's 5-4 overtime win over the Ducks.
"He's done," Babcock said in the postgame news conference, declaring the end of the rookie's playoff season.
Since joining the Red Wings after his season with Western Michigan ended, DeKeyser has impressed the team and made an immediate impact. He has played over veterans Carlo Colaiacavo, Ian White, and Brian Lashoff.
In DeKeyser's absence, one of those three will be called on to step up.
Detroit hosts Anaheim in Game 3 at Joe Louis Arena Saturday night.
