DETROIT (WXYZ) - After losing in frustrating fashion in last year's Gold Cup final, Jimmy Shane captured his first APBA Gold Cup win on the Detroit River this afternoon. Shane's unlimited hydroplane had a malfunction in last year's final heat but he overcame another breakdown to win the 98th running of the race.
Shane, from Covington, Washington, won all of his heats over the race weekend but needed a little luck to win on the river today. His first lucky break was another boat starting to race too soon and incurring a one lap penalty, the second was keeping the boat running after busting a vertical stabilizer bar on the U-6 Oberto boat. With those breaks Shane won the H-1 Hydroplane crown jewel, the Gold Cup.
Shane now joins a long and storied list of Gold Cup champions, his name to be engraved on the trophy along with legends like Bill Muncey, Dave Villwock and Chip Hanauer.
