DETROIT (WXYZ) - It may have been the fourth consecutive year the Spirit of Qatar boat won the APBA Gold Cup, but for its driver it was all brand new.
With a dramatic finish, U-95 Spirit of Qatar driver Kip Brown earned his first career Gold Cup victory in the 104th APBA Gold Cup along the Detroit River.
The fight for first place happened at the final turn near the Roostertail restaurant, with Brown edging out U-9 Team Red Dot driver Jon Zimmerman who finished second. Finishing third was U-11 Peters & May rookie driver Tom Thompson.
U-5 Graham Trucking driver Jimmy Shane, who was one of the favorites heading into the race, finished fourth.
Brown continues the APBA Gold Cup winning history in his family. Brown's uncle and team co-owner, Nate Brown, won the Gold Cup in 2004 and his father-in-law, Terry Troxell, won the Gold Cup the following year in 2005.
