UTICA, Mich. - Chippewa Valley drew inspiration from a teammate battling cancer, and continued their successful start to the season, beating Utica Eisenhower 42-21 in the Meijer Game of the Week.
The Big Reds got out to an early lead after Troy Taylor scored on a 24-yard run. Chippewa Valley's plan was to run the ball until Eisenhower got tired, and it worked.
After the Eagles tied the score on a Dan Chmielewski quarterback keeper, Chippewa running back Doug Roberts scored a magnificent touchdown, breaking five tackles before reaching the end zone.
Leading 21-14 at halftime, the Big Reds sealed the deal in the third quarter on a tipped Brendan Rohlfs pass that fell into the arms of Brendan Murphy.
Chippewa Valley is now 3-0, while Utica Eisenhower falls to 1-2.
Before the game, senior Nick Ureel visited his Big Reds teammates. After playing football his first two years at Chippewa Valley, he missed his junior season battling cancer. After surgery last week to continue his fight, Nick was celebrated on 7 Action News as his teammates gathered around him to applaud his courage.
