Mateen Cleaves visits Action News at 5

(WXYZ) - Former Michigan State point guard Mateen Cleaves will be inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Monday, February 18.  He joined Tom Leyden on the Action News set to discuss the honor and provide some insight on the upcoming Michigan/Michigan State game.

Cleaves, a star at Flint Northern before attending Michigan State, was the unquestioned leader of the Spartans team that advanced to the Final Four in 1999 and returned in 2000.  The second trip was capped off with the school's second national championship.

During the championship game against Florida, Cleaves heroically returned to action after badly spraining his ankle. His dramatic return ranks among the greatest moments in college basketball history.

Next Monday's induction ceremony is open to the public. The 2013 Hall of Fame class includes Cleaves, former Detroit Lions tackle Lomas Brown, former NFL coach Tony Dungy, former Red Wings forward Mark Howe, former women's basketball player Pam McGee, former US Olympian Dick Kimball, former MSU Spartans and NBA star Steve Smith and former Michigan running back Tyrone Wheatley.

The event will be held at the Max M. Fisher Music Center at Orchestra Hall.

Tickets can be purchased by visiting or by calling 248-473-0656.
