(WXYZ) - Michigan Wolverines center Mitch McGary announced Friday he is leaving school for the NBA.
McGary was facing a year-long suspension from the NCAA, after he failed a drug test. McGary says he tested positive for marijuana during the NCAA Tournament, and the team was notified in March.
He was a star for the Wolverines during their run to the NCAA Championship in the 2012-2013 season, pulling in 246 rebounds and scoring 291 points.
McGary didn't do much for the team during the past season though, as he only played in eight games after having surgery on his back.
The NCAA has a rule saying any player who fails a drug test administered by the organization will be suspended for an entire year. That means McGary would have to sit out his entire junior year, and sit out basically two straight years.
McGary is the third player from last year's Michigan team to declare for the NBA draft. The others include guard Nik Stauskas and forward Glenn Robinson III.
