(WXYZ) - Michigan State's head basketball coach Tom Izzo honored the memory of 8-year-old Spartan fan Lacey Holsworth who lost her battle to cancer Wednesday.
Izzo spoke at the MSU Rock vigial, see the video below.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Holsworth family today. Princess Lacey has taught us all an incredible lesson about love, strength and toughness. We can all learn from her on how to handle adversity with class and dignity."
'Princess Lacey,' and MSU star Adreian Payne first became friends two years ago when the team visited a nearby hospital where Lacey was being treated for a rare form of cancer.
Recently, the unlikely pair garnered the attention of national news outlets like Good Morning America as the team advanced deeper in the March Madness tournament.
The pint-sized Spartan could frequently been seen sitting courtside cheering on her towering 6'10" friend.
Izzo continued Wednesday, “She has become an inspiration to our team, our families, our university, and most recently our entire nation. At just eight years old, she has given us all a lifetime of memories."
"We are all saddened today, but we are all better people for having known Lacey. Her smile and passion for life will live in the hearts of everyone she has touched across our country.”
