Miguel Cabrera takes hot shot off face in Tigers game

Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera took a hard-hit ground ball off the face in this afternoon's game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

He left the game bloodied, received stitches and was taken to a local hospital for x-rays.

Cabrera was injured in the bottom of the first inning fielding a ground ball off the bat of Philadelphia's Hunter Pence.  The grounder took a bad hop on the infield grass and hit Cabrera directly under his right eye.   He was wearing sunglasses, and it's possible his face was cut by the sunglassses.

He immediately reached for his face and quickly realized there was a fair amount of blood emanating from the cut.   He was tended to on the field by Tigers trainer Kevin Rand and surrounded by teammates Max Scherzer, Don Kelly, Brandon Inge and Ramon Santiago.

After the game, a 4-3 Tigers loss, manager Jim Leyland said, "He basically looked like a fighter who needed a cut man and who wasn't doing too well in the fight."
