MSU, Michigan, Detroit all learn tournament foes

(WXYZ) - The pairings have been announced for the NCAA Basketball Tournament and Michigan State, Michigan and Detroit Mercy will all play on Friday, March 16.

Michigan State earned the top seed in the western region and will open up tournament play on Friday with a game against LIU-Brooklyn in Columbus, OH.

The Spartans earned the top seed by virtue of their win over Ohio State in Sunday's Big Ten Tournament final.  Michigan State has been a top seed on three other occasions, each time advancing to the Final Four.

Michigan State and LIU-Brooklyn are scheduled to tip off at approximately 9:20 p.m. Friday night.

Michigan earned a four seed in the Midwest bracket and will play against Ohio University on Friday in Nashville, TN, and "Beat Ohio" is about to take on an entirely different meaning.

Michigan fans -- and football coach Brady Hoke -- have taken to calling rival Ohio State by the name "Ohio" lately, but now the Wolverines will actually face Ohio University.

Michigan (24-9) lost to Ohio State in the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament Saturday. Michigan has never been a No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament. This is the program's highest seed since being a No. 3 in 1998.

Michigan and Ohio are scheduled to tip off at 7:20 p.m. Friday night.

Detroit earned a 15 seed and will be paired against Kansas on Friday in Omaha, NE. 

The Titans clinched a berth in the NCAA Tournament Tuesday night when they beat Valparaiso for the Horizon League championship.  It's Detroit Mercy's first trip to the NCAAs since 1999.

Detroit and Kansas are scheduled to tip off just before 10 p.m. Friday night.
