(WXYZ) - The NHL will not get the world record for hockey attendance because of a counting issue, after nearly filling Michigan Stadium during the Winter Classic. according to Yahoo Sports.
The NHL announced it sold 105,491 tickets to the event, and agreed with Guinness on a way to count fans entering the stadium.
They counted the tickets according to the barcodes that were scanned by ticket takers at the gates as fans entered the stadium. Because of the weather, some fans didn't arrive until after the first period, when ticket takers were no longer scanning tickets.
The record still belongs to Michigan Stadium, when 104,173 fans attended the 2010 hockey game between Michigan and Michigan State.
