Nick Minnerath leads Titans past Alabama State

DETROIT (12/10/12) – Senior Nick Minnerath match a season-high with 22 points as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team extended its home winning streak to 13-straight games with an 81-68 victory over Alabama State on Monday at Calihan Hall.
Minnerath led Detroit with 22 points hitting 8-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-5 from the beyond the arc, while Juwan Howard, Jr. matched his season-high with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, 4-of-5 from downtown. Ray McCallum recorded 15 points and eight assists, while Jason Calliste finished with 11 points and five assists. Doug Anderson pitched in with eight points and six rebounds, while Minnerath grabbed a team-high eight boards.

Detroit (5-4) jumped out to an early, 8-0, lead and took a 14-8 lead into the first media timeout. The Titans then extended their lead to 22-12 with 13:49 left, before the Hornets responded with a 12-0 run, to take a 24-22 lead with 8:34 left. But Howard responded with a three-pointer on the Titans next possession to help Detroit reclaim the lead 25-24, but ASU answered back with an 8-4 run to lead 32-29 with 5:09 left. Detroit closed the half with a 10-4 run to take a 39-36 lead into the locker room. Minnerath led the Titans with 10 points and four rebounds, while Calliste pitched in eight and McCallum added seven.
The Titans opened the second half with a 10-4 run to build a 49-40 lead with 16:30, before the Hornets responded with 10-3 lead to trim the lead to 52-50 with 13:17 left. But that was as close as the score would get as Detroit responded with a 28-11 run to build its largest lead of the game 80-61 with 1:41 left. The Titans closed the game by playing their entire bench for the final two minutes en route to claiming their third-straight win.
Alabama State (0-7) won the battle on the boards, 42-35, but the Titans forced 20 Hornets turnovers, which resulted in 22 points. Detroit also made 19-of-24 free throw attempts, including 12-of-13 in the first half, while ASU only made 6-of-15 from the charity stripe. The Hornets did shoot 49.1 percent from the floor, while Detroit shot 40 percent, but 57.7 percent in the second half.
ASU was led by Shawntez Patterson who finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Joshua Freelove pitch in 14 points and Denzell McDaniel scored 11.
Detroit will conclude its four-game homestand on Saturday, Dec. 15 when the Titans host Akron at Calihan Hall. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be televised live on FOX Sports Detroit.
GAME NOTES: Detroit extended its winning streak to 18-straight games when scoring 80 or more points … The Titans also improved to 5-0 at home this season and have won their last 13 games at Calihan Hall … The eight assists for Ray McCallum give him 347 for his career, which ranks ninth all-time in Titan history … Detroit leads the all-time series against Alabama State 2-0.
