(WXYZ) - NBA Comissioner Adam Silver banned Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life on Tuesday. Pistons owner Tom Gores says he supports the decision.
Silver revealed the NBA's punishment at a news conference, instituting the suspension effective immediately.
The move was applauded by the basketball community, and those watching and tweeting along with the decision.
The Pistons organization released a statement shortly after the announcement.
"I am proud of Adam Silver for providing the leadership and strength necessary in this situation. He has my full support," Gores said in the release.
On Monday, Gores spoke out against the racism Sterling displayed in the voicemail obtained by TMZ.
“We trust commissioner Adam Silver to handle this matter swiftly and properly, but let me state without reservation: There is no place for prejudice or intolerance in our league, or anywhere else,” Gores said. “That’s not a debatable point. It’s a first principle.”
Silver said he will encourage the board of governors to force Sterling to sell the team.
