Reggie Hall honored at Calihan Hall

DETROIT (2/26/13) -- Former Titan baseball player and longtime supporter of UDM athletics Reggie Hall was honored on Tuesday night when he received the prestigious John Conti Letterman of Distinction Award from the UDM Athletic Department.

University of Detroit Mercy Interim Athletic Director Jason Horn made the 2013 presentation along with the Conti family during the Titans Horizon League basketball game against Loyola at Calihan Hall.

Hall lettered three years in baseball at UDM for Head Coach Bob Miller from 1975-1979. He majored in Communication Studies and has been proud to work for 30 years in the local Detroit media. Hall was able to be a student/fan of the Vitale and Smokey Gaines coaching days as basketball went to two NCAAs and one NIT during his time.

He is a regular member of the Detroit Road Scholars and has met a lot of people on the road trips from different University and those friendships continue to strengthen over the years.

His support towards the school and its athletics programs since then has been unwavering. Nearly every men's basketball game, "Titan Reggie" can be seen -- and heard -- in the stands.

At the workplace, Hall has covered Stanley Cup championships, World Series, Super Bowls, NCAA Final Four titles, and NBA Finals, among many other grand events. He has spearheaded the first steps in many journalists' careers, running the internship program in the Channel 7 (WXYZ) Sports department for over two decades.

The John Conti Letterman of Distinction Award was established by Anheuser-Busch to honor its long-time employee upon his induction into the Titan Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. Conti was the captain of the 1949 Detroit football team that won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. At 6-1 and 300 pounds, he was an Honorable Mention All-American and the biggest man in college football. His spirit and charitable enthusiasm have always seemed to be even larger. In tribute to that spirit, the John Conti Letterman of Distinction Award is presented to former Titan varsity athletes who go above and beyond at work and in the community. Hall is a reflection of those characteristics, much like the Award's first recipient, legendary Titans basketball coach Bob Calihan, and the honorees that have followed him.
