Former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr is stepping down from the College Football Playoff selection committee because of his health.

7 Action News has learned that Carr is contemplating a non-life-threatening surgery that would require a long recovery, and he did not want to commit to something like the College Football Playoff committee without being able to give 100 percent.

Carr was supposed to begin his first year on the committee this fall. Now the committee with have just 12 members.

Carr released a statement saying: “This is a difficult decision because I have enjoyed my preparations and I have the greatest respect for the other committee members and the playoff itself. I regret that health issues will prevent me from executing the responsibilities expected of a committee member.”

The legendary coach led the Wolverines from 1995-2007, going 122-40 in those 13 seasons. Carr's time in Ann Arbor also earned him a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame.
