DETROIT (WXYZ) - Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera has been named Sporting News MLB Player of the Year.
The third baseman for the Detroit Tigers finished the regular season with .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 RBIs. His outstanding performance with the Tigers resulted in the first Triple Crown title since 1967.
"He's a great hitter having a great year. He played his best when we needed him to, down the stretch," teammate Justin Verlander said.
Tigers great Al Kaline even weighed in on the big award.
"He's the best hitter I've ever seen other than (Ted) Williams. He's just amazing. Watch him day in and day out, he very seldom takes a bad swing. To be able to use the whole field the way he does with power, my goodness," Kaline said.
Both American and National League MLB players decided on the Player of the Year award.
