University of Detroit Mercy athletic director resigns

Gaither steps down after five years

After five years at the University of Detroit Mercy, Keri Gaither has resigned from her position of Athletic Director to pursue other opportunities, according to a release from the school this afternoon.

Gaither took over the role of Athletic Director in 2007 and has overseen the growth of many areas within the athletic department, including the expansion of the Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse and men's tennis.

Gaither also oversaw major facility renovations and developments in athletics, including the $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track, the tennis pavilion complex, the new basketball court dedicated to Dick Vitale, and the new grass field to accommodate the lacrosse and soccer teams

Jason Horn has been named interim athletic director as the school begins its search for Gaither's replacement.  Horn joined UDM in 2011 as Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs.

The university also announced today that Derek Thomas, an assistant coach for the men's basketball team, has also resigned.
