“We are excited to grow our presence in this market and offer our viewers a new option for news at 10 p.m.,” said Ed Fernandez, Scripps divisional general manager and vice president and general manager of WXYZ.
“We are passionate about Detroit and this region, and we are fortunate that our parent company, E.W. Scripps, has decided to invest deeper in this market. TV20 gives us an opportunity to expand our programming, news, and community service as we take an even bigger role in the rebirth of the city we serve,” Fernandez said.
The launch of 7 Action News at 10 on TV20 comes on the day WXYZ-TV’s parent company, E.W. Scripps, finalizes the purchase of MyNetwork-TV affiliate WMYD TV20 from Granite Broadcasting Corp. The agreement creates a duopoly in Detroit with TV20 and WXYZ Channel 7, Scripps’ largest television station.
“It’s exciting to offer viewers a new, unique news program at 10 p.m.,” said Mike Murri, WXYZ station manager. “WXYZ has been a powerful influence in the Detroit community for more than 60 years, and we are eager to expand our rich tradition of quality programming and community service through the acquisition of TV20 Detroit.”
