This fall, the South Lyon East High School Department of Theatre will present William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy about three couples’ journeys to the marriage altar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The setting is Athens in the royal palace where the king is soon to join an Amazon queen in holy matrimony. In the woods nearby, an interfering fairy king and his minion play havoc with the mortal lovers and his own queen. Through potions that bring instant “infatuation,” people fall in love with the wrong people that can only lead to high jinks and broken hearts. Then throw into the mix some discombobulated town folk, who through their innocent byplay, perform an “oxymoron-ish” play about the hilarious death of “Thisbe and Pyrymis” for the impending marriage celebrations. “All’s well that ends well” when everything is sorted out and magic spells are reversed. Asses go back to being human, queens return to their kings, the proper couples are re-matched and life goes on!
