DETROIT (WXYZ) - A giant sinkhole has formed in the middle of the road on Detroit's west side.
The sinkhole is at the intersection of Monterey and Linwood, west of the Lodge freeway.
A contractor was doing some routine maintenance on Friday morning when he noticed some erosion and that's when the road slowly started opening up.
Workers tell us the sinkhole is 30 feet wide and 16 feet deep.
DTE workers are checking for gas leaks around the hole. People in the area were asked to turn off their utilities just as a precaution.
Linwood is closed in both directions at Monterey.
