FLASHBACK VIDEO: 1986 Action News report looks back on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

(WXYZ) - This Monday will be the 27th time that the nation has paused to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the national holiday that was named in his honor.

However, after Dr. King's assassination it took a legislative battle to get the US Congress to pass the law that declared the third Monday in January as a national holiday in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

In 1986, as the nation prepared to celebrate Martin Luther King Day for the first time, Action News anchor Erik Smith took a look at the life of Dr. King and the battle over the holiday in a four part report.

You can watch that original report in its entirety in the video player above.
