(WXYZ) — 'Pray the Gay Away,' a new play based on the lives of twin brothers Michael and Zach Zakar from Sterling Heights, will be playing at the Baldwin Theatre in Royal Oak this weekend.
The Zakar brothers, age 27, are gay Arab-Americans from Michigan. Their Mom is a devout Catholic who hates gays.
The true-life coming out comedy chronicles Michael and Zach as they face awkward sexual encounters, coming out to each other, and their biggest foe, their mother.
The hilariously and moving play shows what it's like growing up as gay, Iraqi-American twins in post 9/11 America. Pray the Gay Away was inspired the night Mom snuck into their bedroom and force fed them "holy grapes," determined to "de-gay" them.
