(WXYZ) — The Michigan Department of Transportation said they are getting close to finishing all work associated with the "Restore the Reuther" project on I-696 in Macomb and Oakland counties.

According to MDOT, crews have been working since April to finish all remaining work on both the freeway and service drives, after the project began last year.

MDOT said that freeway work in Macomb County is complete, but punch list work will continue into the fall and be performed during off peak or nighttime hours with minimal lane closures where needed.

In Oakland County, MDOT expects nighttime freeway work to be completed by the end of this week, weather pending, with minor punch list work needed similar to Macomb.

The service drive construction will continue or the next few weeks with completion scheduled for early fall. Major work is scheduled on the westbound service drive within the next two weeks, followed by the eastbound service drive after.

According to MDOT, single-lane closures will be needed along the service drives and there may be short-term, brief windows where both lanes are closed to allow for work to be completed safely.
