(WXYZ) — Gas prices in Michigan are up once again in the state and have set the highest price of 2019, according to AAA Michigan.

The company reports that average gas prices in the state are up six cents to an average of $2.43 per gallon, and last week, prices hit $2.48 per gallon.

As for metro Detroit, gas prices hit a 2019-high of $2.44 per gallon on Wednesday, but have since declined to $2.41 per gallon, still six cents higher than a week ago and 26 cents higher than last month.

Compared to last year, drivers are still paying between 4-7 cents per gallon less.

"Gas prices rose as predicted last week, due to crude price gains and oil refineries conducting seasonal maintenance," said Nancy Cain, spokesperson, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Gas prices may fluctuate over the next couple weeks, but will mostly follow an upward trend this spring, as demand rises and refineries switch to a more expensive summer-blend gasoline. AAA forecasts the national average should peak at around $2.75 by Memorial Day weekend. That opens the door for an average increase of another 35 cents this spring."

The most expensive gas prices can be found in Jackson at $2.48 per gallon, Benton Harbor at $2.47 per gallon and Saginaw/Bay City/Midland at $2.46 per gallon.

Traverse City has the cheapest price at $2.29 per gallon, followed by Flint at $2.40 and metro Detroit at $2.41.
