(WXYZ) — If you are planning to travel on I-75 this weekend in Oakland County heads up. The highway is closed down in both directions in parts of metro-Detroit.

People who live near I-75 in Oakland County have been enjoying the break in construction that came with the worst of winter.

“Now, it is back,” said Alan Nelson, as he looked at crews on the Meyers Avenue Bridge in Hazel Park.

The closures come as the the Modernize I-75 Construction project ramps back up.

According to MDOT, northbound I-75 will close from 8 Mile to Square Lake beginning at 11 p.m. Friday. That's a 16-mile stretch. Southbound I-75 will be closed from I-696 to 8 Mile Rd.

Some of the closure is so they can demo bridges in Hazel Park this weekend and next weekend.

Plus MDOT will be preparing for a traffic shift so work can be finished from 13 Mile to Coolidge.

“By the end of the month we expect all 2-way traffic to be using northbound lanes to allow us to rebuild the southbound side of the freeway,” said Rob Morosi of MDOT.

This modernization project started in 2017. When it is done, it will impact I-75 from 8 Mile to M-59. Brace yourself and pace yourself. It will not be done until 2023 if all goes as planned.
