(WXYZ) — Officials with the Wayne County Road Commission say the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge is back open.

“Our crews worked round the clock to ensure this bridge is safe and ready for motorists to use,” said Beverly Watts, Director of the Department of Public Services, in a news release. “We would like to thank the Gross Ile residents for their patience during this temporary closure. Also, we would like to thank Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans, Commissioner Joseph Palamara and the Township officials for their support and guidance as we took the necessary steps to get the bridge re-open.”

The bridge had been closed since last week for emergency repairs. Crews installed 10 steel plates on support beams that had deteriorated.

Wayne County has issued the following repair schedule for the bridge, which will undergo rehabbing in 2020:

  • Phase I (foundation improvements): The work that was originally planned as phase 1 will include foundation rehabilitation, which entails reinforcing the existing foundation, most of which is underwater. This work will require highly specialized expertise and equipment. The design is expected to be completed in summer 2020.
  • Phase II (superstructure improvements): The work will entail removing and replacing deteriorated structural members. The design for Phase II has been completed and rehabilitation work is being bid out. Work is expected to take place throughout the entire 2020 construction season.

The work will require the bridge to be closed for an extended period of time.
