DETROIT (WXYZ) — When we told you I-696 would be back open in both directions as of Monday, January 7 as construction in Macomb County wraps up, we got one question from you again and again on social media. What about I-75?

7 Action News reached out to the Michigan Department of Transportation for an update on the project that started in February 2017.

For a year and a half after the start of work only construction crews traveled on a thirteen mile stretch of I-75 near the Rouge River Bridge.

There is no question. Construction crews have done an enormous amount of work since. They replaced the equivalent to twenty-four football fields of concrete on the Rouge River Bridge, re-built the Goddard Road Bridges, and repaired eleven other downriver bridges.

Now traffic is moving in both directions, but only one lane is open southbound from around I-96 to Springwells in southwest Detroit, causing delays for people traveling Downriver.

MDOT Spokesperson Diane Cross says on Saturday, January 5, I-75 from Clark to Springwells will be closed southbound from 7 am to 1 pm so crews can repair the road markings and median to prepare for the full re-opening.

“Mid- January to late January for sure we will have all four lanes open,” said Cross. “Depending on what happens with the work that still has to be done and if weather works in our favor, we will be closer to mid-January.”

That’s right. The end is near.
