ROMULUS — The only way for some people to make it through this brutally cold weather is with the help of a few friends and the generosity of strangers. And Steven Alexander, 55, can testify to that.

In 2016, several women came together to help Steven, who was homeless at the time, and his dog, King, that was sick.

The women held fundraisers and gathered enough money to get Steven and his dog a home.

But recently the furnace in their home went out and it's been a struggle to keep even their small, poorly insulated, mobile home warm with space heaters.

"My social security pays the rent and pays the bills, but I can't afford a furnace when something like that goes wrong," said Steven.

So, Jeanie Parks and Kellie Gibson started a GoFundMe page to try to raise enough money to help replace Steven's furnace.

Then, Wednesday afternoon, the folks with Affordable Comfort Heating and Cooling in Allen Park heard about the need to get warmth back in Steven and King's home and volunteered to install a new furnace.

Affordable Comfort Heating and Cooling release the following statement:

I think it’s really important that we, as business owners and locals, do our part to help one another especially in times of need. When we saw this story we didn’t hesitate to help in any way we could. We already pride ourselves on offering services that are affordable to the community we live and work in and to those communities surrounding ours, that to do this, was simply giving back to the people who’ve helped us build our brand.
