DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit’s first winery in more than 60 years will breathe life back into the shuttered Stroh’s Ice Cream building.

Detroit Vineyards will open its first tasting room inside the former factory on Gratiot Avenue in Detroit.

The build out will include some relics of the former factory.

The tasting room will open to the public May 3, and will remain open seven days a week.

At the tasting room, guests will be able to sample the brand’s varietals, which range from Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mead.

Most of the grapes are sourced from the west side of the state, but some wines will include grapes grown in Detroit. The company says it now has about two acres of vines planted around Detroit.

Detroit Vineyards was founded in 2014 by Dr. Claes Fornell, a University of Michigan professor and Blake Kownacki, a winemaker and vineyard manager.

Currently, the wines are sold at six locations around Southeast Michigan including Plum Market in Ann Arbor and House of Pure Vin in Detroit.
