(WXYZ) — Officers in three Metro Detroit Police Departments are comparing notes and could be going after several people working together and in several states pulling off expensive smash and grabs in jewelry stores.

The latest one happened last night in Taylor. The week before, it was at Tiffany’s inside Somerset in Troy. And the week before that it was at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township.

The feds are also working with police as this could be a ring working other states in the Great Lakes region.

The similarities are that the men are wearing dark clothing, gloves and targeting expensive wedding rings with gold and diamonds. In two of the cases, they’ve gotten away with more than $100,000 in value. They smash a display case with a small sledge hammer and are out the door with the goods within a minute. No weapons are used or implied.

In the case in Taylor last night, they dropped some of the rings on their way out the door and people picked them up and returned them to the store that was hit, which was J. B. Robinson jewelers inside Southland Center.

Police believe these are several young black males involved. Eyewitness descriptions run the range from tall to short, and heavy set to thin.
