The Michigan Humane Society has some warnings about summer dangers for your pet that are right in your own backyard.

Many plants, flowers and shrubs are toxic to pets if ingested, so do some research before buying and planting. Discourage your pets from chewing on any plants, and supervise them outside.

Follow the instructions carefully for fertilizers and weed & feed products, or avoid them in places your pets spend time, if possible.

Dog owners should avoid using cocoa mulch in their yard, as it is toxic and many pets are attracted to the smell. Like chocolate, it contains theobromine, which can have a serious effect on the pet's heart, kidneys and central nervous system.

Wipe your pet's paws after walks to prevent them from ingesting or tracking in lawn chemicals.
