Matthew Smith

Matt joined 7 Action News in 2016, drawn by the opportunity to return to his home state. He now lives in midtown Detroit with his two cats Moo and Paws.

Before working in Detroit, Matt was a reporter and anchor at WOWT-TV in Omaha, Nebraska. He also worked in the same capacity in El Paso, Texas and southern West Virginia. He got his start in television working at WJRT ABC 12 in Flint, MI while attending school at the University of Michigan-Flint.

His award-winning reporting has taken him across the country and ranges from breaking news, to politics and feature stories that focus on personal stories.

Matt's work has taken him across the border into Mexico following a deadly factory explosion, to the heart of coal country when 29 miners died and to the capital of Texas when the city of El Paso made the controversial decision to demolition city hall to make way for a Triple-A baseball stadium.

Regardless of the story, Matt has always worked on finding the voice of the people inside his stories. When big news breaks other journalists rush in, and rush out. Matt believes that the biggest story is what is left behind, the people and the recovery that continues long after the bright lights of network news fade away.

That work ethic has led to journalism awards from multiple groups including the Texas Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press. He also won awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters before he graduated high school while he was working as a student journalist at a local television station in Davison, Michigan.

In his spare time Matt is an avid runner. He's a former athlete that has recently come to terms with the idea that he's better at watching them, then playing them.

Matt is also a mentor through Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
