DETROIT (WXYZ) — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is going to be hiring 5,000 people to work at its new plant in Detroit. Now the city is sending out word, if Detroiters want to get in the front of the line for those jobs the time to take action is approaching.

Right now crews are laying the foundation for the new Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plant in Detroit. It is a $1.6 billion production facility that is scheduled to be open and running by late next year.

When it opens it will employ about 3,850 workers. Plus FCA is hiring another 1,100 to work at the neighboring Jefferson North where it is investing $900 million to improve production.

Taking a look at the jobs available there are production jobs that pay at least $17 an hour, skilled trades, and supervisory positions.

The Detroit at Work program is working to help Detroiters get those jobs. It announced that as of June 10 Detroit residents will be able to pre-register for the application process. They then will have to go to a session on the job requirements and process.

Under a deal with the city Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has promised to give applicants who go through Detroit at Work’s process priority over applicants from the general population.

The job requires a high school diploma, state I.D., and clean drug test. Detroit at Work has programs o help people get a high school equivalency degree to qualify.
