The Transportation Department will release new guidelines Tuesday for the testing, operation, and commercial sale of autonomous vehicles, according to a statement.

The 15-Point Safety Assessment sets expectations for manufacturers in several key areas of concern, including safety, privacy, and cybersecurity.

The speedy development of new guidelines aims to keep the US at the forefront in the global race to get driver-less cars on the road by the end of the decade.

"The automotive industry as we know it now is going to change dramatically in the next 10 years," said automotive industry expert John McElroy.

With the future if the automotive industry about to take a giant leap forward, Detroit looks to have a competitive advantage. Citing the city's "critical mass of talent," Uber announced Monday it will set up a new research facility in the metro area in a few months time.

"Detroit's very much in the game," said McElroy.
