What if you could burn 600 calories in 30 minutes without exercising? That is just one of the claims about infrared sauna pods.

Marissa D’Onofrio likes going to the sauna, but not just a traditional sauna.  These infrared sauna pods are like a modern day sweat lodge, and becoming more popular with consumers.

“I feel like my skin tone, texture has improved – I’m definitely sleeping a lot better at night – that’s important…I feel energized,” says D’Onofrio.

Some of the health benefits that users notice is relieving muscle and joint pain, improving arthritis, lowering blood pressure, reducing wrinkles and purging the body of harmful toxins.

Spa Director, Jourdan Rystrom, says “when it comes to total body wellness, most people only focus on diet or fitness they fail to realize that you also need to detox and you need to relax.”

Rystrom also says “you feel more lean after you sweat in one of these saunas...it does burn 600 calories per 30-minute session.”  For those that are concerned about reducing cellulite and losing weight.

However, Dr. Lindsey Bordone says that even though you may have water loss with sauna pods, generally it won’t help you lose pounds long term.

Dr. Bordone also says “it might help soothe some arthritis but in terms of blood pressure and other conditions, it doesn’t truly help them.  They do raise false hope that they’re going improve your overall health.”

Pregnant and nursing women, children, people with heart and thyroid problems, or other health concerns should not use the pods at all.

If you do plan to use the pods, Dr. Bordone stresses that hydration is key.  “If you heat your body to an excess temperature. And you’re not well hydrated – it can cause a lot of problems.”

If you are thinking about using the sauna pod, you should consult with your doctor first.
