A couple in northern Oakland County has owned a carpet cleaning company for years. But it was when they were expecting their first child ten years ago, that the company went through a green makeover…
“Kids, especially small kids, are on the floor all the time,” co-owner Tina Ersig says. “Crawling babies are on the floor, and then putting their hands in their mouth. And anything that’s in the carpet is going into their mouth, so it’s really important to me to keep things as clean as possible and safe for our kids.”
Tina says their company, “The Greener Cleaner,” was Michigan's first non-toxic carpet cleaning company. The cleaners they use...
“They’re made of completely food grade ingredients,” Tina explains. “We make them by hand in small batches, and they’re completely non-toxic, and safe for kids and for pets.”
And if reviews on sites like Yelp and Angie’s List are any indication, The Greener Cleaner has had many happy customers, including Jenna Silk. She has a young son and a dog.
“We wanted to make sure we had no chemicals, nothing that could hurt either of them,” she says. “And I’m currently pregnant with our second and I wanted to make sure there weren’t any chemicals or anything harsh that I would be smelling.”
While the company is based in Oxford, they service homes in all of Oakland and Macomb Counties, and part of Wayne County as well.
Walking the walk
It’s not just green carpet cleaning Tina is passionate about. I first introduced you to Tina two years ago when I profiled her other entrepreneurial endeavor called Change Soap . She started making all natural soaps when her young son was having skin problems…
Her most popular soap has activated charcoal, with tea tree and lavender oil. “Actually charcoal acts like a magnet to draw impurities from your skin,” she explains.
All but one of the Whole Foods Stores in Michigan are now selling her soap. She also makes lotion sticks, coconut oil, moisturizing face serums and healing balms.
