The Michigan Department of Health has issued an emergency 'Do Not Eat' fish advisory for all fish from the Huron River.

The Department says fish from the Huron River at Milford in Oakland county to the Huron River at Base Line and Portage Lakes in Livingston and Washtenaw county are not edible due to PFOS.

PFOS is a chemical that provide the coating surface on non-stick pots and pans. The chemical is water-resistant.

Fish from Kent Lake also tested positive for PFOS.

Ten black crappie and ten large-mouth bass were pulled from Kent Lake on Friday, and all 20 tested positive for PFOS.

“I mean it’s scary I mean there is contaminates everywhere,” said Todd Cordon, who fished at Kensington Park regularly with his two sons.

Jennifer Gray, toxicologist at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services added: “Contact with fish or contact with water like while swimming or kayaking isn’t something that would give people an exposure."

Other bodies of water include Hubbell Pond, Kent Lake, Strawberry and Zukey Lake, Gallagher Lake, Loon Lake and Whitewood Lakes.

Touching fish or swimming in these bodies of water is not a health concern, since the chemicals do not move easily through the skin, health officials say.
