2 firefighters injured while battling blaze at abandoned Detroit school

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Two Detroit firefighter were injured while fighting a fire at an abandoned elementary school in Southwest Detroit Thursday.

The fire broke out at the now closed Phoenix Academy near Evans and Pershing streets around 7 p.m.

Both firefighters were admitted to an area hospital for smoke inhalation. One of the firefighters is in critical condition while the other firefighter's condition is unknown. Both firefighters are expected to be OK.

According to fire officials, the firefighter with the current unknown condition was injured while coming to the assistance of the firefighter currently in critical condition.

There are no updates on what caused the fire. This is an ongoing investigation.
