The race is on to build the first high-speed pod travel system known as the Hyperloop and this past weekend, a pod design competition revealed some creative ideas for this futuristic plan of transportation.

More than 115 teams participated in SpaceX's Hyperloop Pod Competition Design Weekend at Texas A&M University.

These groups presented their design for the pod--basically the part of the system that would hold the passengers.

A few of the judging criteria:  innovation and uniqueness of design, feasibility for track testing, and potential functionality.

Twenty two of those teams stood out to the judges. Now, those top honorees are traveling to California this summer to put their prototype design through the ultimate test—performance on a Hyperloop test track, according to the university.

For best overall design, Massachusetts Institute of Technology took home the bragging rights this weekend. But, other universities claimed honors for pod innovation and technological excellence.

The president of Texas A&M University stated in a press release that he hopes the competition created momentum for these young innovators—calling it a world changing event.

Multiple companies are working toward building the first Hyperloop. The concept is the brainchild of entrepreneur Elon Musk.
