The Port Huron Police Department is investigating after a 22-year-old woman was killed by two dogs on Thursday afternoon.

We're told Rebecca Lillian-Kay Hardy was in the 1700 block of 10th Street when she climbed over the fence and into the backyard around 4 p.m.

Witnesses tell police it was then that Hardy was attacked by a pit bull in the backyard and then a husky. A neighbor tried to help Hardy, and then ran to get the one of the owners of the dogs to come outside. We're told the owner had to use a piece of wood to get the pit bull away from Hardy.

Hardy, a mother of an 18-month-old girl, sustained severe facial and neck injuries. She later died at the hospital.

Both dogs are being held at the St. Clair County Animal Control Center. Port Huron Police Chief Jeff Baker says they will be recommending both dogs be put down.

Police say prosecutors will determine what, if any, charges are brought against the owners of the dogs.

Hardy's family is hoping for help from the community in covering the cost of her funeral and other expenses to help care for her little girl.
