DETROIT (WXYZ) — A 22-year-old who died in a Southwest Detroit motorcycle crash late Saturday has been identified.

Friends said Michael Blackwell died when his motorcycle crashed into a light pole. Mourners gathered at a vigil Sunday evening and shared words of comfort at the crash site.

A fundraiserpage was set up to help with funeral cost. Blackwell was a mechanic who enjoyed working on various types of vehicles. Those who knew him said he was 'outgoing, smart, and a good hearted young man'.

According to a preliminary investigation, the victim was driving his motorcycle in the area of South Fort near Schaefer just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday. While traveling at a high rate of speed, police say he lost control and hit a light pole.

Then three men on Harley Davidson motorcycles pulled up to the scene, loaded the victim's crashed motorcycle to a white Ford F-150 pickup truck and took off. Friends of the victim claim they took the bike to a Blackwell's home.

Police are still investigating. If you have information on this incident, please contact Detroit police.
