According to the University of Michigan, three students have been diagnosed with mumps.
The viral infection can be easily transmitted, and can cause mild symptoms in people who are immunized, while some people can experience complications.
The University Health Service is working with state and county public health officials to "identify, treat and prevent mumps," according to the university.
Mumps are known to cause puffy cheeks and swollen jaws. Symptoms include swollen and tender salivary glands, fever, headache, fatigue and appetite loss, muscle aches, testicular swelling and pelvic pain. Those symptoms can begin within 12 to 25 days after initial exposure.
The virus can be spread by an infected person coughing or sneezing and releasing droplets of contaminated saliva that is breathed in by another person.
